¡Feliz Día de la Independencia!: Happy Independence Day!
On 5 July 1811, delegates of Venezuela’s first National Congress, meeting in Caracas, voted to declare independence from the Spanish Crown. Seven of the ten provinces of the Captaincy General of Venezuela took part. The Declaration of Independence, written mainly by Cristóbal Mendoza and Juan Germán Roscio, set out principles such as the equality of individuals, the abolition of censorship and freedom of expression, and proclaimed a new nation. With it, Venezuela became the first republic in Spanish America to declare independence. The struggle for independence continued for years afterwards, but 5 July is remembered as the moment the decision was made.
Independence Day is a national public holiday. It is marked with official ceremonies, civic and cultural events, and gatherings with family and friends. The best-known event is a large parade in Caracas, on the Paseo Los Próceres, with members of the armed forces, police and civilian groups, which is usually broadcast nationally. The date is also the day of the national armed forces. In towns across the country, communities hold events, and the yellow, blue and red of the national flag are seen in many places. Venezuelans abroad also gather to mark the day. For many people it is a day of national pride and reflection on history, and experiences of the day vary.
