Yawm watani sa’id!: Happy National Day! (Arabic)
On 23 September 1932, the Kingdom of Hejaz and Nejd and Its Dependencies was renamed and proclaimed the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia by King Abdulaziz. National Day was established in 1965 by King Faisal and is one of two non-religious public holidays in the country, alongside Founding Day. It celebrates the nation’s unity, its history and its hopes for the future.
In the days around 23 September, buildings, bridges and roads are lit up in green, the national colour, and flags appear everywhere. Families head out to concerts, cultural shows, heritage events and fireworks, while air displays and parades draw large crowds, for example along the waterfront in Jeddah. Traditional performances, such as the ardah, a dance with drums, poetry and swords, are a familiar part of the celebrations. Many people wear green and white, and shopping centres and public spaces host family activities. Others celebrate more quietly at home, with family meals and visits. How people mark the day varies by city, region and family.
Saudi Arabia has two national celebrations that are easy to confuse. National Day, on 23 September, marks the unification and naming of the modern Kingdom in 1932. Founding Day, on 22 February, marks the establishment of the first Saudi state by Imam Mohammad bin Saud in 1727.
